Act Local - Think Global: A Seminar on Global Leadership

Act Local - Think Global: A Seminar on Global Leadership (ALTG) was organized on February 8, 2007 for UT-Austin students.

ALTG is an event for students to hone their leadership skills for the global arena through a series of interactive workshops on global issues led by student mentors. The event, structured around the UN Millennium Development Goals, which include HIV/AIDS, economic development, gender issues, human rights, and sustainable development, was built around existing global resources at UT, creating a new synergy and network.

25 accredited student organizations participated in ALTG, showcasing their current projects and offering leadership opportunities for UT students. In addition, the committee collaborated with Northwestern University and representatives from major global nonprofits around the country to help organize the seminar.

Over 300 undergraduates and graduate students attended ALTG, which offered workshops on major leadership skills, such as organization building, vision and goal setting, and communication skills, to be successful in the global arena.

At ALTG, UT students learned to take action on significant global issues from peer leaders already active in the global arena. Students had an opportunity to interact with a freshman who started his own social enterprise in Mexico, a sophomore who studied Arabic in Tunisia with the US State Department, and a junior interested in the rights of women around the world. ALTG 2007 was sponsored by the Student Events Center, Informal Classes, the Resource Center, Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Center for Women's and Gender Studies, and Liberal Arts Career Services.

Act Local - Think Global 2008 is planned for Thursday, February 7, 2008 in the Texas Union.
